• Open Business Bank Account (credit union)- A business bank account allows you to easily keep track of expenses, convey finances to investors, receive and deposit payments, and plan your budget more accurately. It is important to keep this separate from your personal bank account to prevent commingling.

• Get DOT (Department of Transportation) medical card (DOT physical)- If you operate a vehicle that requires a DOT medical card, you’ll need to schedule a DOT physical exam. The DOT physical exam must be completed by a doctor listed on the FMCSA National Registry list. You can locate these providers by searching for DOT medical examiners near you.

• When you arrive at your scheduled exam, you’ll need to provide a completed DOT medical card form as well as a list of all medications or current health problems. Your exam typically consists of the following:

• Vision and hearing tests

• A blood test to screen for high blood pressure or any other underlying medical issues

• Urinalysis to check for drug or alcohol presence

• Once you’ve completed your DOT physical exam, you’ll be given a DOT medical card. You’ll have to submit a copy to your State Driver Licensing Agency. Each agency has different policies on how you can submit. Check your state’s policies prior to submission.

• Apply for authority with FMCFA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) GET MC & USDOT) Applying for a USDOT number or Motor Carrier number can be a confusing and unnerving process, Premier One Consulting can help you help you get exactly what you need. FYI This can take approximately 21 days .

• Sign up for your MCS-150, First-time applicants must use the Unified Registration System (URS). For more information about URS, or to apply for the first time, click here

• Get insurance on your truck, insurance is expensive but it’s ok you will make the money. Be sure your insurance is active at least a week prior to your authority going active because there is a 21 day vetting process for your motor carrier authority.

• Commercial General Liability not less than $1,000,000 per occurrence and $2,000,000 in the aggregate

• Auto Liability not less than $1,000,000 per occurrence including a trailer replacement coverage of $50,000

• Cargo of at least $100,000

• Side Note: some brokers or companies may require more or less. These are the requirements for Amazon!!!

• Do your BOC-3 right after you do your insurance. Your authority cannot go active without your BOC-3-Designation of Agents for Service of Process.

• Do your Unified Carrier Registration (UCR) this lets DOT know how many trucks you have

• Enforcement of UCR for the 2021 year began January 1, 2021. Motor carriers and other entities required to register, are subject to citations, fines, and penalties imposed by individual states under state law. Complete your registration now at www.ucr.gov to maintain compliance with the UCR program. For more information about the UCR program, visit www.plan.ucr.gov
